It’s the most important meal of the day but, for many of us, it’s also the laziest! When you wake up each day, the last thing you want to do is get creative in the kitchen and start cooking. However, if you’re hoping to start your day the right way, you need to take the time to perfect your plant-based breakfast game. Here are some tips to help you out.
1. Prep the night before
Short on time in the morning? When you’re in a rush, you’re most likely to simply grab something quick and easy. There’s just one problem – often that thing is less than healthy. Prepping your breakfast the night before is a smart way to make sure that you stick to your plant-based goals. Whipping up some delicious overnight oats and popping them in the fridge to rest could be the answer. Give it a go!
2. Find alternatives to eggs
Before you decided to embark on your plant-based journey, you might have thought that eggs were synonymous with breakfast. Yes, many of us grew up guzzling down fried eggs, boiled eggs and, of course, scrambled eggs. If you’re finding it hard to kick the habit, it might help to look for an alternative that offers you a similar experience.
Many people find that the creaminess of avocados does the job. When you’re craving the comforting texture of scrambled eggs on toast, replace it with some mashed avocado instead. Add a little chilli and salt into the mix for a truly memorable breakfast snack.
3. Juice, juice, and juice
Here at Shed, we love nothing more than a zesty, tangy plant-based juice. Starting the day with a cold-pressed juice (i.e. a drink that has been made without any heating or processing) means that you get a real burst of vitamins and minerals. This type of drink contains a high amount of nutrients as its creation does not destroy any of the natural elements. You can either try making your own or buy a ready-made juice!
4. Choose your dairy-free milk
There once was a time when finding plant-based milk was a real trial. You’d be lucky to find a coffee shop stocking the odd carton of soy milk. Plus, most of the time, you’d avoid asking for it altogether for fear of eliciting a snarky sidewards glance. Luckily, those days are well and truly over. Now, you can get a wide array of milk alternatives.
Before you start planning your plant-based breakfast, figure out which one suits your taste buds. A little-known fact is that soy milk offers the most nutritional value of the leading milk alternatives on the market. Try out a few and see what works for you.
5. Boost your protein intake
Protein is essential to your general health. But you already knew that, right? What you might not realise is that a high-protein breakfast could be the best way to start the day. Research from the University of Missouri and Purdue University suggests that by having a first meal that’s packed with protein, you can prevent weight gain.
Now, you might think that meat-free protein is hard to come by. Nothing could be further from the truth. When you start looking into this area, you will see that there are actually loads of excellent sources of plant-based protein. Load up on beans, seeds, and grains for a healthful start to the day.
6. Keep things simple!
Right now, all of the above may feel a little overwhelming. We hear you. Remember, no one is expecting you to revamp your entire diet overnight. Instead, you need to keep things as simple as possible and go at your own pace. Take your time and make small, sustainable changes when you feel that you’re ready.
